Art Show, Auction at The Provident Bank to help find cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

The Provident Bank’s Exeter branch located at 95 Portsmouth Avenue will be hosting “Art for a Cure for DMD (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy)”, a special fundraising event featuring nature-themed artwork and photography by local students and art teachers, professional artists, and community members.

The artwork will be on display at the Exeter branch for one week beginning on Monday, April 1, 2013. A closing reception and silent auction will take place Friday, April 5, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will benefit “Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy”, a non-profit organization dedicated to funding research to find a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a devastating childhood disease that affects 1 in every 3,500 males born worldwide, resulting in about 20,000 new cases each year.

Two local boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – Lucas Currier, a fifth-grader at Newfields Elementary School, and Cameron Yurik, a third-grader at Swasey Central School in Brentwood – are among those youngsters hoping for a cure.

Lucas and Cameron were the inspiration for the Art for a Cure fundraiser, a project created by 14-year-old Rebecca Gowing, an eighth-grader at the Cooperative Middle School in Stratham and the daughter of Laura and Jamie Gowing of Newfields.

Rebecca is the driving force behind the this project, with support from her former elementary school art teacher, Crystal Buswell, who now teaches both Lucas and Cameron in art classes at their schools.

Information about the art show and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy can be found at www.facebook.com/ArtToCureDMD. For those unable to attend the silent auction on April 5th, the site provides a creative opportunity to support “Art for the Cure DMD” through online donations to “Liberate DMD Ladybugs,” and also features other art-themed activities designed by Rebecca

'The Tree Knows' by Renee Schneider

(Amesbury, MA)—The Provident Bank’s Lobby for the Arts in Amesbury is pleased to present “Alternate Realms of Possibility” featuring the artwork of Becca Donohue, Elizabeth Wilson Jackson and Renee Schneider. The exhibit is on display to the public during regular bank hours through May 8, 2013 in the lobbies of The Provident Bank’s Amesbury branches, located at 5 Market Street and the corner of Route 110 and Main Street.

Becca Donohue is a junior at The Boston Institute of Art, majoring in photography and is also an art education major at Lesley University. She has been a serious photographer since the 8th grade. “Lola”, her camera, is her best friend. Becca’s specialty is showing the world a different perspective on common objects and situations, while capturing moments in time that would be otherwise lost or unnoticed.

Elizabeth Wilson Jackson is an Amesbury resident and a local artist. She has worn many hats and travelled through multiple professions, only to be drawn back time and again to her one true calling; to create by any medium necessary. “Bio-Karmic Meditation Art” is a highly stylized and methodical process that Elizabeth has developed to provoke an experiential observation of the unconscious self. It is the esoteric reflection of the human condition as it reacts to cause and effect.

Renee Schneider is a resident of Amesbury and a local artist. She has a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Graphic Design, and a Master’s of Education in Creative Art and Learning. She has worked as a graphic artist and also worked as a kindergarten teacher for several years. Now, combining her love of art, and teaching, she owns and operates Colorful Kids, in Amesbury, providing private art lessons to children while she continues to develop her own art. Renee’s art is an eclectic mix of acrylic painting and mixed media. She is known for her whimsical style and vibrant color. She has also written and illustrated, ‘Swing Time’, her first published children’s book. Her other talents include commissioned portraits of people or pets, and also mural painting.
